Is Melanoma Treatable? 2 Breakthrough Skin cancer Treatment + Other Natural Remedies

Before we get to know about the new skin cancer treatment,

Let’s first get to know a little about skin cancer and how it’s different from other types of cancers

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the growth of tumors in the skin cells.

The skin is made up of several different layers,

and there are different types of skin cancer depending on the type of skin cells that the tumor is formed in.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer,

with an estimated one million new cases every year.

Types of Skin Cancer Determines The Type Of Skin Cancer Treatment

There are three types of skin cancer:

1- Basal Cell Carcinoma (also called epithelial tumor)

is the most common type of skin cancer.

It ranks first in cases of skin cancer,

Basal cell carcinoma is held responsible for for 90 percent of all skin cancers in the United States.

Repeated and prolonged exposure to sunlight is the first cause for this type of skin cancer.

Treatment of x-ray acne,

exposure to arsenic,

and hydrocarbons exposure as well (industrial contaminants also) increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma.

2- Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Skin cancer threatens the life of those who gets it,

and sometimes arises from pre-cancerous skin growth called “actinic calcification“.

The risk of Squamous cell carcinoma is strongest among light skinned and blonde people  who are frequently exposed to strong sunlight.

1/4 of the skin cancer hits are caused by  Squamous cell carcinoma

and is more common in men than women.

It can be formed in any squamous cells (skin, lining of internal organs, pathways of respiratory and digestive systems)

And it may also spread to other organs.

Both basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma are also known as non-malignant tumors,

which are less serious, but should be detected as early as possible for more skin cancer treatment options.

3- Melanoma

It is the deadliest type of skin cancer,

with melanoma killing about 50,000 people per year in the United States.

Melanoma occurs when melanocytes, begin to proliferate without any control to form a tumor that threatens the lives of those infected.

Melanoma tumor is painless and may arise from moles  that already exist or that which has appeared all of a sudden.

Melanoma may occur anywhere of the body,

including the beneath the nail and inside the eyelid.

Melanoma type of cancer has the significant advantage for its ability to being detected early,

because its signs are visible.

Early Detection is Crucial For Skin Cancer Treatment

Here’s a simple guide on how to detect skin cancer:

1- Shape and size.

It begins in the form of a tiny freckle or mole no larger than a diameter of about 1/4 inch (about 6 mm).

The most common places of the body that usually gets skin cancer are:

  • The face (especially in the elderly people)
  • The the upper areas of the torso (especially in men)
  • The legs(especially in women).

2- The Color.

The mole or freckle may range in color from pink to dark brown,

but it is of a strong distinctive color,

that can be recognized with the naked eye.

Doctors call freckles, patches of age and normal moles “colored patches”.

Cancer spots have several colors and abnormal patterns,

or appear to be different from other skin defects on your body.

The diameter of the freckle or mole is less than 1 inch,

or the size of a pencil eraser.

If the diameter is larger,

there is a higher probability that it might be a type of skin cancer.

You need to check your skin regularly throughout your body,

but especially areas that may be exposed to the sun.

Most non melanic cancers result from intermittent sun exposure.

Also, excessive tanning can promote malignant tumor growth on the skin occasionally.

The diagnosis of melanoma requires a tissue sample to check the suspected area of the skin thoroughly.

Under the microscope, the doctor can recognize the difference between the non-harmful mole and melanoma,

and can also tell the depth of the incursion into the adjacent tissues.

If the sample is shown to be melanoma,

your doctor may take another sample that check even more tissues around the mole.

Melanoma, that has grown deep into the skin,

may require a skin grafting procedure to reduce the formation of scars.

What causes skin cancer?

1- The main cause of skin cancer is long exposure to the sun,

as the sun’s ultraviolet rays harm the skin.

So people who are exposed to sunlight especially for tanning purposes,

are often more likely to develop skin cancer,

especially those who have previously experienced severe sunburns.

2- Light-skinned and blonde people are more likely to be affected in general than dark-skinned,

3- Any exposure to non-UV radiation (such as radiation therapy, internal tanning devices,

Or  exposure to radiation at work,

increases the chance of skin cancer.

4- Melanoma can also arise from already existing moles in your body,

so check these moles regularly to monitor any change in color, size, or shape.

If you notice any change, tell your doctor immediately.

5- Skin cancer can also appear without any obvious reason.

AGAIN Early Detection for Skin Cancer

Only early detection can detect any abnormalities in the skin and diagnose skin cancer early.

Early detection can save your life.

We strongly recommend regular skin cancer screening at a trustworthy cancer center.

The presence of one or more of these factors does not necessarily mean skin cancer,

but it may increase the risk of getting it,

so stay careful anyway and ALWAYS use sunscreen\sunblock when exposed to sunlight.

4 Common Symptoms Of Skin Cancer

1- A new mole or even a change in an existing mole,

is the most common indicator of melanoma,

especially the change in mole color and / or its diameter, puffiness or unevenness.

2- Bleeding, itching, ulceration and pain in the mole are less common symptoms but need to be medically evaluated.

3- New growth of one or some skin tags.

4- A wound that does not heal, or a change in old growth.

Steps Before Beginning With Skin Cancer Treatment

  • Doctors at most cancer centers use a range of diagnostic techniques to detect skin cancer accurately,

and determine its stage.

The doctor will take an excision biopsy to remove any abnormal tissue,

and then identify the diagnosis and stage of the tumor.

  • The thickness of the tumor or the depth of the penetration of the tumor (Breslow depth) is the most important indicator of the diagnosis.

Skin Cancer Research

  • The treatment of skin cancer in general depends on the stage of the disease,

and may vary from simple removal of the infected area,

to radiation therapy, cryotherapy, immunotherapy and even surgery.

A New Hope For Skin Cancer Patients

Scientists hailed the results of two global trials to treat advanced skin cancer treatment, describing it as “exciting and amazing.”

Both drugs help the immune system to recognize and target tumors.

The results were announced at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago.

The experimental drugs work to close the biological pathway used by cancer to hide itself from the immune system.

Yet, It has been extremely difficult to treat skin cancer that extends to other members.

Just a few years ago, the average survival of skin cancer patients was up to about six months.

Survive Longer

the survival period increased to at least one year.

This drug, called “MK-3475“,

is also being tested for other types of tumors that use the same mechanism to prevent immune system attack.

  • An oncologist at the Royal Free Hospital in Britain,

Has been testing patients with skin cancer and lung cancer.

“Pembrolyzumab seems to have the potential to make a quantum leap in the treatment of cancer,”.

  • Warwick Steel, 64years old, a skin cancer patient,

has been taking doses of Pembrolyzumab every three weeks since October.

Before the start of his skin cancer treatment,

Steele could barely walk because of the spread of skin cancer in one of his lungs,

Causing him a lot of breathing  difficulty.

“I was tired just to stand up, I was tired of shaving my beard,

but I started to feel like I was back to my almost normal state again,

I could even clean my garden and go shopping,” he said.

The radiation on his lungs shows that the treatment was administered after only three doses till his lung clearance completely from the cancer.

Complex Skin Cancer Treatment

NIVOLUMAB was tested in combination with the licensed Belimumab immunotherapy.

  • In an experiment with 53 patients,

the survival rate was 85 percent one year later and 79 percent two years later.

John Wagstaff, a professor of medical oncology at the Swansea School of Medicine,

took part in a larger trial of these drugs.

“I am convinced that this is a breakthrough in the treatment of skin cancer,” he said,

“The experience is still not specific, so we do not know what treatments patients are taking.

“It’s exciting to see a range of new treatments for people with skin cancer,” said Peter Johnson, chief physician of cancer research clinics in Britain.

However, doctors are urged to be cautious, since the results published are only a first stage of early trials.

The third phase of trials, which include many hospitals in Britain, is still undergoing.

When the results of that phase are announced within about a year,

doctors will then be able to ascertain the likely benefits of those new skin cancer treatments.

Like all other drugs, experimental treatments will always have side effects.

Warwick Steele said he suffered from night sweats and lost consciousness two times,

when he took the new drug.

Still, Steele said the drug was worth it,

pointing out that doctors were working to minimizing these symptoms.

Traditional Skin Cancer Treatment

There are also some natural remedies as well as skin soothers that won’t harm if used along with the other prescribed medications,
