Insights into the AAPC CPC and AHIMA CCS-P exams

The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) are two of the biggest, most powerful organizations of their kind in the US. Their respective exams are called Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P).
If you are aiming for a career in the medical coding and billing industry (that pays up to $50,000 a year to certified specialists) then you need to have at least one of these certifications. Both certifications are nationally accredited and can be got by passing the respective exams.

AAPC CPC Certification Exam

AAPC is the largest medical coding certification body in the US. It’s the main credential is the CPC which is exam-based. This is also the most popular certification programs among candidates seeking medical coding jobs and employers who want to hire suitably qualified individuals to their billing and coding departments.

The CPC exam format is multiple choice requiring 70% to pass. However, the percentage of successful candidates is rather average as it’s a tough exam (even though it is open book). And that’s precisely the reason why you should prepare for it in advance.

AHIMA CCS and CCS-P Exam

Like the AAPC certification exam, AHIMA has its own certification exam called the CCS and CCS-P. This is more popular among the specialist folks… the ones who have at least a few years of experience in a physician’s office or a hospital inpatient & outpatient environment, and want to boost their qualifications with relevant credentials.
