Best Pecan Pie Recipe In The World

I don’t think that I have ever tasted one that didn’t taste good and it all began when I met my husband and he was telling me about a pie that his school in England served. It was called Gypsy Tart and he used to salivate just thinking about it. And then we found Sugar Pie at one of our local restaurants and decided that all of these pies had something in common… a whole lot of sugar. And in the case of pecan pies, a good handful or two of pecans for good measure.

Let’s take a look at this pie to see what makes it so good!

Storing Your Pecans

The best place to store your pecans is in a zipped plastic bag in the freezer. They should last you about two years.

          Pecan Trivia

  1. Bourbon and chocolate can actually be found in the ingredient lists of some pecan pies. Never expected either one of those!!
  2. The only time (I’m Canadian) I ever tasted pecans was at Christmas. One of our traditions included cracking nuts of every sort and every once in a while, pinching a finger in the cracker which hurt like there was no tomorrow.
  3. I’m going to have to check out these orchards… it’s hard to believe that Southern orchards produce 250 million pounds of pecans in an average year!

Pecan Pie… a few more tips

  1. Maybe the pecan pies down here are different than the pies that I have tasted. Apparently, when cooked correctly, the filling should have a custard-like texture. Ours is more like the filling of a butter tart. Hmmm
  2. There are several different kinds of crusts that can be used for a pecan pie. Some prefer a short crust and others prefer a heavier crust using whole wheat flour. It’s all up to you. 🙂

What Did I Do Wrong?

  1. Never use a shiny pie plate unless you like your pecan pie soggy…
  2. You won’t want to sit your pie on a baking sheet either and yes, I have done this to prevent a mess, but there again, the heat is even and the cooking process will pretty much ruin a good pie.
  3. The ingredients that you use really should be as fresh as you can manage but this goes for anything that you are baking. Freshly baked goods simply taste better if the ingredients are at their best!
