The Ebers Papyrus , is the first known reference to most internal diseases and their ancient Egyptian cures.

      If the Edwin Smith papyrus is the oldest surgical  guide, the Ebers papyrus has the same honor in the field of “internal diseases” because it dates back to 1550 BC.

The Ebers papyrus was named after George Ebers, a former Egyptologist at the University of Leipzig, Germany.

This professor actually bought the manuscript in 1872, during his visit to Egypt, to make his way to its present location in the library of the University of Leipzig.

 

It is believed that the discovery of the Ebers Papyrus was near Luxor,

Her vast fame is due to being the first ancient Egyptian medical papyrus to be translated and published in several Western languages, the first of which was German language translation in 1874.

This Ebers Papyrus is not only just a medical book divided into chapters, it’s rather a collection of works and research on topics from more than forty different sources.

 

The Ebers Papyrus contains 887 prescription for various types of diseases and symptoms and the way to examine and treat them with ancient Egyptian Cures and old medicines.

 

This 110-sheet papyrus begins with an introduction to magic and ancient Egyptian magic spells,

Then they come to mention prescription drugs.

The manuscript records about 811 prescriptions and about 700 medicines, most of which are natural medicines that are made up of plant and animal materials.

The Ebers Papyrus has mentioned 29 diseases of the eye, including granular osmosis,

And 15 diseases of the abdomen.


As well as many symptoms of lung and skin diseases.

And some other of the ear, nose, teeth and joint diseases.

The migraine has been fully described and treated in a full chapter of the Ebers Papyrus.

The researchers noted that some of the symptoms that occur between the lines of this papyrus refer to uterine cancer which refers to the existence of the cancer disease even in ancient Egyptian times.

Also there is some other symptoms that refer to the first known description of diabetes.

It has also described schistosomiasis as we know now, which is a disease that still settles the banks of the Nile to this day.
